In the olden times, women never had to work to put food on the table. Of course, they took care of the household and the children as well as other chores like the washing and the cleaning. The duty of earning money to buy food and to pay for expenses though rested solely on the father of the family.
Currently, more and more women are advancing their careers to help in earning money for the family. In fact many high positions in the corporate world are being held by women even the position of ruling the nation in some countries. Though many men are more open when it comes to issues like these and have allowed their wives to pursue their careers, there are still questions raised as to whether children are better off if their mothers stay at home to be a full-time mother.
I have been raised by a mother who sacrificed her career to rear me into the person I am today. I have to admit that I consider myself very lucky indeed to have a full-time mom who was always there whenever I needed her; during the times I was sick, when I needed her to tutor me with school work, when I had a very important game to cheer me on and when I was in a special school play to give me a standing ovation.
If my future husband could just provide our daily needs, I would definitely want to follow in the footsteps of my mother. I would want to be hands on in raising my children and not leave it to some nanny. I have noticed that mothers who chose their family over the careers had lesser problems with their children and had a closer relationship with them. Though there are also numerous working moms whom I truly admire for the way they have budgeted their time between career and family, still managing to raise beautiful children.
But I have to admit that since we are experiencing hard times, sometimes we need to be practical. How can you give your child the best that life has to offer if the money your husband is earning is not quite enough. I suppose for women who are in such a situation it is all a matter of time management. What is more important is the quality time and not the quantity.
In my case though, only time will tell if I do get the chance to be like my mother.
