Playtime is one of the most important things in a child’s day. It helps them to do so many things including learn and develop through exercise. Kids need to have regular playtime in order to grow into fully functioning adults. Of course, as fun as it is to play and run and jump, it can also be dangerous. There are a few things that parents can do to establish healthy and safe playtime for their children. By incorporating some rules and guidelines, playtime can be safer and more beneficial for both the children and the parents.
As your small child is growing, teach them the meaning of things like no hitting. Violence starts very early on in children and it has to be stopped before they believe that it is an acceptable form of behaviour. Teaching kids to play safely with one another shows them that they are not invincible and must live by certain rules if they wish to enjoy their time spent playing.
Sharing is an absolute must. Small children rarely want to see someone else enjoying their toys. Though some adults are much the same, it’s not a character trait that looks good on most people. Teach your kids about sharing while doing regular activities at home. There are many ways it can come up. Portray sharing as something that you want to do to show your friends that you care about them. It sure beats the alternative of coming across like a selfish kid that will be a selfish adult if not reprimanded.
Wherever you allow your children to play, be certain that it is the safest place possible. Keep small kids away from busy roads or open yards. It takes just seconds for a child to wander on to the road and small children are easily missed by drivers due to their small stature. Likewise, any playground that you choose to take your kids to should be enclosed by a fence. If you have valid safety concerns with your local playgrounds, bring it to the attention of your local municipality immediately.
Supervise children while they are at play. It seems that the worst accidents that take place during playtime are those that involved unsupervised kids. Never leave them unattended in any place that poses obvious danger like a swimming pool or public place. Even if you think your child is old enough, it may be a good idea to keep a close eye on them anyway. Accidents take just seconds and most of them are preventable.
When kids get playing hard they can work up a big appetite. Keep snacks and drinks on hand and be sure to serve them at regular intervals. Dehydration happens easily, especially during hot days. Make sure kids always have access to fresh water or proper fruit juices. Replenishing lost fluids is essential when playing hard.
Playing is already a healthy activity. However, parents can do a lot to make it even better. Do what’s best for your kids while at play.
