A monster truck is a special automobile that is popular and commonly used in the field of motor sports. The style of this vehicle is typical for a pickup truck although they are modified and constructed with very large wheels and larger suspensions. Besides from being constantly featured in sports entertainment competitions, monster trucks are also popularly used in mud bogging and tractor pull shows. These trucks are very famous in the United States and on county events that feature car and truck shows. Even though these vehicles look dangerous and seemed to have the capacity to flatten you they are not that dangerous but they can really run on over man-made barriers regardless of how high it can be. They are equipped with shut-off switches that are controlled by a remote and this is installed in order to prevent accident in case the driver loses control. Monster truck competitions nowadays have been modified for some freestyle performance. This freestyle event gives the truck drivers chances to travel the course and crush the obstacles they want just to entertain the audience. Common vehicles that are usually used in monster truck runways are motor homes, small buses, and even small airplanes.
The Advent of Monster Trucks
It is during the early years of the 1980s when monster trucks were commonly used for primary exhibitions. Years after the TNT and USHRA Motor Sports decided to use these vehicles for racing purposes too. Racing trucks involve the elimination through drag races that are held on a track course filled with different obstacles. This event that switched to racing was the main reason why truck racers resorted to lighter trucks and have improved their engine power. The modern monster trucks nowadays are more scaled with dune buggies and improved four wheel drive functions. Basically, the trucks now are technically not ‘real’ trucks anymore and only maintained the original name due to their similarity with the fiberglass bodies’ similar to original monster trucks before. Monster trucks at present have three safety measures, one being the remote ignition interruptor in a separate switch, the other one is found on the dashboard of the truck, and the last one is located at the rear used in shutting down the electrical power.
The Issue of Monster Trucks at NASCAR
Monster trucks are said to be the equivalent to professional wrestling in the motor sports world. It is an extreme type of sport which may be very dangerous for other people and even to the driver. Basically, it is necessary for monster truck drivers to wear safety harnesses, head and neck straps for restraints, helmets, and firesuits for their protection. Due to its focus on obstacle courses, some do not consider it as a formal type of racing. Some fans and teams, on the other hand, express their desire for this sport to be regarded as NASCAR. However, since most events that involve monster trucks feature presentations and a show-like theme unlike other types of car racing sports, the media look at this as a form of sports entertainment regardless of the high risks and sophisticated vehicles used in this entertainment.
